Sketchin' at Cap

Well I'm still drawing though I'm back to using a sketchbook at times (I already miss ctrl z). Here's a couple of sketches done during the first couple of weeks at Capilano.
I do find drawing on a bus difficult so these are usually done during breaks or in the morning.

SNK/Playmore's Mina Majikina again and one of the others (I can't remember the name).

Well I think this one started out as a ninja and then I was thinking about the film Ping Pong and how much I want to watch it again.

A quick sketch of Odin Sphere's Gwendolyn(Done by the same people who made Muramasa)

And finally for tonight just some random characters.

Next time I'll post some of the assignments I've been doing over these last 5 weeks. Time is just flying by

Hey peoples, I don't know if anyone noticed but the posts slowed down. I've recently started Uni. Once I get my workflow organized I'll be posting more regularly

Until then I'll be posting when I can.

Ninja for Breakfast

Tenchu 2's Rikimaru in 30

After doing Ayame it only seemed natural.

I feel a bit mixed on this one. I kinda knew what I wanted but It wasn't an easy character to do it with. It feels like I tried to hard to stay loose or something. Maybe I should read more spiderman comics for this sort of pose. One more thing to study.

Reworking the peach

I was looking at the pic I did this morning all day and I got to thinking it could do with some changing.

I spent another hour or so on it and I'm feeling a lot better about this one

Tennis Peach

Nintendo's Peach in 60

I had a sketch done in 20 this morning and then decided I wanted to try some colour (baka). Problem is it's not a very solid sketch to begin with. Oh well.

Ah Peach, the first video game damsel I ever rescued. And who says I never draw princesses.

Cheeky Archer

SNK/Playmore's little Samurai archer Mina Majikina in 45

I liked the effect of the last pic I did so I was going for something similar. It helps to have a character with white in their costume.

It took longer than I thought it would. These simple poses seem to always take longer

Birth of the Stealth Assassins.
My favorite ninja game of all time.
I can't remember how many times I played this game.
Out of the 3 ninja's I still don't know who had the best story line

Sadowloo future

Capcom's Cammy remixed in 30

I always wanted the next Street Fighter to take place further in the future. I figure Cammy would take over Shadowloo with her doll army.

I'm too tired this morning

Are you game?

FFVII's Tifa Lockhart in 45

I had meant for this to be 30 and I'm kinda reusing the pose from yesterday, but I wanted to start drawing hands. The second hand wasn't working so I dropped it.

Tifa was one of the first pugilists in an RPG that I remember playing and she is still one of my favorites.

Another late night remix.

This time Capcom's Guile in 45
I'm ready for bed now.

edit: Is it just me or are my night sketches tighter than my morning sketches. I guess it makes sense.

Just trying out some simple black and white.
I'm too tired for much else.
The red is taken from the trailer for Persona3 Portable.

I hope they translate this game soon (although its not out in Japan yet)

Cammy revisited

Capcom's Cammy

I wasn't too happy with that last Cammy pic I did. Too damn grumpy but I thought there was something there so I had a go at reworking it.

A few hours later and...

It felt good to do something more finished.

Don't pout

Persona 3's Yukari Takeba in 30

This morning went well. I just wanted to start making my way into expressions. I noticed with some of my drawings I tend to draw the same face.

While this one's not a huge departure from my usual it turned out alright. I'm also trying to focus more on the line

Some mornings

Capcom's Cammy in 30 or so

Damn she looks grumpy. One of those un thought about pics. I just couldn't think this morning. I think I got up too early.

Someone asked me the other day how I'm colouring at the moment. The colours are flat with colourized grey level for shadows with a linear burn blend. I find I like linear blend over multiply because it gives me more control over the resulting shadow colour

ninjin loves you yeah

Macross Frontier's Ranka Lee in 40

I said wanted to try something different. I remembered the song from the series and thought of this.

If you get the chance and you're a Macross (Robotech) fan, track down this series. I watched it on line. It's a lot of fun with some aewsome space battles (unlike Macross 7). The last battle is a 2 episode epic complete with deuleling songstresses. Only in Macross would that work.

Aigis From Atlus' persona 3 in 30

Good old androids with personality complexes.

Reminds me that I need to study hands. I had a rough idea of what I wanted, got a little lost on the way. Ended up confusing some layers. I'm thinking that 30 minutes isn't enough but then I remember that these are just exercises and I shouldn't worry so much.

Punchy white

Atlus' Akihiko Sanada from Persona 3 in 30

Well another pugilist for this morning's exercise. Persona 3 was an interesting game where the character's special attacks involved them shooting them selves in the head.

Kinda meh about the pic though. Seemed like a good idea when I sat down, maybe I'm just too tired this morning. Good thing this is just exercise :)

edit: I need to work on hands

Those thighs

Capcom's Chun li in 30

Though I may have out grown her she 'll always be my first video game girl.

Thought I try a harder brush for line this morning... and it fought me all the way. Probably partially to do with the pose to. Too early in the morning to be trying this.

Overall not bad, just less dynamic as I had in my head. I really need more time for something like this. It needs a strong foundation. Needs strong legs...

Punchy

SNK/Playmore's Vanessa in 30

Another red head. For this mornings sketch I had the pose in mind and the character appeared as I was loading up photoshop. Nice when that happens. The colours came out a little strong but that could be just the contrast of the colour against white.

Vanessa is a King of Fighter's pugilist. She's got some great animations in the game. It's funny, I've always been a Street fighter fan but recently with Capcom going 3D with the series I find myself drawn to SNK's series. Especially with the new KOF being 2D.

Yuzu Tanikawa from Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor in 30

This morning I wanted to try colour so here we go. A quick sketch followed by quick lines, then flat colours with a grey overlay done with a linear burn. It worked out quite well and was quick to do.

I'm looking for buy a new DS game and it looks like this may be the one. If I pick it up I'll let you know what it's like.

Fran the Viera from Square Enix's FFXII in about 45

I've got a small thing for bunny girls. I don't know why but there you go.

I slept in the last few days, I've been pretty busy. In my head I started thinking that I'd draw in the evening or something. 2 missing days later I knew it wasn't happening. So I realized that if I want to really do this I've got to make time and get up.

the Protagonist

Atlus's Protagonist from Persona 4 in 30

I had my ipod on shuffle yesterday and the Persona 4 OST popped up. Thought I'd have bash at one of the characters this morning. To the best of my knowledge Protagonist is one of the few characters in RPG history to use a golf club for his main weapon for most of the game. I guess you use what you can get.

No cheesecake today...

No pressure?

Well there's 2 today.

The first is a quick 15 of Etna from Disgaea. I really like this game but I haven't been able to finish it yet. Too much grinding.

I slept in again yesterday so I opened up photoshop during the day. I wasn't to happy with the last apple themed sketch I drew so I wanted to try again.

The second is this mornings 30.

I guess It's supposed to be Pokemon Misty. It's so hot here now I just had to do something beach themed.

I loaded up photoshop this morning and for some reason the pressure sensitivity on my tablet just wasn't reading. I'm hoping it's just a glitch or something. I didn't want to stuff around with it so anyways it made this sketch alot harder than it should have been. I've gotten used to the pressure I guess. hopefully restarting my computer later will fix it.

Pole Fighter

Billy Kane in 25

I don't know why but I woke up with the urge to do some pole fighting. King of fighters' Billy Kane popped up ready to go. I have to admit though he's probably not my favorite fighter to use as I'm not a big fan of brawlers with weapons. I got this one down in 15 for some reason so I played around with it for another 10.

An apple a day

30 min of the cutest shotokan clone.

Sakura from Capcom's Street fighter series. Again I had a pose in my head but I didn't know who I was drawing until halfway through. A good reminder that I need to work on hair and clothing. Also using large areas of black.

Edit: July 26, 2009

Just a quick one this evening as I slept in :). A 20 minute ninja.

Thinking

Well another Ai chan in 30

I wanted to do something beach themed but a little different for me. So I avoided the usual "bouncy" or heroic pose and went for something more restrained. Half way though during some keyboard shortcuts I stumbled across a nice brush then couldn't find it when I changed brushes for a second. I'll find it again.

The funny thing is I ran out of time for the beach and her costume so now she's stuck with a birthday suit. Oh the tragedy. :)

Goin' for a ride

Ai chan in 30

It's one of those mornings were I wasn't sure what I was drawing. I'll have to dig around for her costume ref. I know where it is but I'd already started drawing when I thought about drawing her. Going for the short hair again. I think it suits her more. The old hairstyle was very anime inspired.

I'm not too sure about the pose. I'll need to reference if I attempt this again.

The Wandering Trainer

Post Pokemon Ash and Pikachu in 30.

I played around with this idea a while ago. I did 2 others but was probably distracted by a shiny new game or something, so never got around to doing Ash.

Although the idea was to depict a life after Pokemon, Ash just seemed to be one of those characters who would spend his whole life collecting them all. The wondering trainer always training, always battling, always seeking the answer to the eternal question,

"Why do I collect?"

Probably finds himself as the antagonist for Pokemon crimson or something

The Lone Wolf

Metal Gear Solid's Sniper Wolf in 30.

Part of me wants to do the gun properly, maybe later.

Boss fights are usually a big part of game I like . Sniper wolf's fight was my first experience with just that. A sniping battle. For a fight with so little blasting away this fight was so intense. The only thing that topped this type of fight was the fight with the End in MGS3. I'm hoping that they bring her back for the next MGS. :)

The Operative

A 15 min sketch of the Sassy Cate Archer from The Operative: No One Lives Forever.

I had no time this morning and I was thinking that some of my frustration with this exercise was I was trying to hard and over working the pieces. So I kept this loose and took the advice of trying some other brushes. (I like this one.)

NOLF is probably my all time favorite FPS. There's so much done right in this game that makes it so awesome, From the characters to the writing (in an FPS?!) to the smooth soundtrack, though if you've played it you already know all that.

This whole drawing in the morning things is harder than I thought it was going to be.

Anyways no plan or idea with this one. Though I realized a few things as result. I work better when I know what I'm drawing. I need to work on hair rendering and clothing. and finally I should remember to use layers when adding something to see if it's fits (there are only so many undos available in photoshop (unlike life where there are none!)).
